Country Cousins is a registered Trinity College London ESOL examination centre (centre number 47899). We now offer preparation courses for the GESE or ‘Jessie’ as they are often referred to. These exams provide a reliable and valid scheme of assessment. The following table shows the stages, order grades and the equivalent CEFR level descriptors.

GESE = Graded Examinations in Spoken English.
CEFR = Common European Framework for Reference (to Languages).

4, 5, 6

7, 8, 9

10, 11, 12

The 12 grades provide a continuous measure of linguistic competence and take the student from absolute beginner to near-native proficiency. Every student develops their skills at different speeds; this graded system ensures that each stage gives students the chance to mark their progress.

The exams are conducted in a one-to-one, face-to-face oral interview between the candidate and a Trinity examiner. The interviews imitate real-life conversations where information is exchanged, ideas are shared, and topical issues are debated.

We are now offering these exams alongside a 15 hour activity programme. This means that students will be integrated with the rest of the school for a normal 15 hour general English programme, they will spend 12 hours on General English with an extra 3 hours of intense exam focus; including exam strategy training and opportunity to practise. We can also offer exam only or preparation only. All options are supplementary to our standard courses.

The exams are organised in four development stages. These stages are designed to provide a framework for the teaching and learning progression. The tasks in the different stages are designed to allow candidates to demonstrate their abilities in a number of different types of discourse.

  1. The initial stage is basic conversation which is initiated by the examiner. The time allowed is 5-7 minutes.
  2. The Elementary stage begins with the candidate introducing their chosen topic for discussion. The examiner directs the discussion using the points prepared by the candidate. Then the examiner moves on to the conversation phase, choosing 2 subject areas from the list provided. The time allowed is 10 minutes.
  3. The Intermediate stage begins with the candidate initiating and maintaining a discussion from their chosen topic. Next the examiner initiates the interactive task for the candidate to develop and maintain. The examiner then moves on to the conversation phase, choosing 2 subject areas from the list provided. The time allowed is 15 minutes.
  4. The Advanced stage begins with a formal presentation of the chosen topic leading into a candidate-led discussion. This is followed by the listening task, and then the examiner moves on to the conversation phase, choosing 2 subject areas from one of the lists provided. The time allowed is 25 minutes.
