Programme Summary
Adventure Sports - (available at Channel & Barnstaple Schools of English and St. Michael's Residential)
This programme offers many different sports that can only be enjoyed on the coast. This includes quad biking, abseiling, climbing, surfing, canoeing, coastal traversing, adventure swimming and archery. Country Cousins uses Surfseekers and Skern Lodge, who are licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.

The programme is subject to change as some activities are dependent on weather and safety conditions.
Students must be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing and be prepared to wear appropriate safety equipment when necessary.
Please note that students will get wet so older clothes and shoes may be advisable.

Digital Photography - (available at Barnstaple School of English only)
This programme is suitable for all students from complete beginners to experienced photographers with a general interest.
The aim of classes will be to give the students an insight and understanding into the modern art of digital photography, using more advanced techniques to better capture and record the local area.
Students will learn more about:
- Selecting subjects
- Rules of composition
- Setting up a digital camera
- Displaying images on the camera’s LCD screen
- Using the various camera functions
- Zoom lens effects
- Transferring photographs to a computer
- Enhancing images
- Selecting part of a photo’ to change selected part only
- Copying photographs
- Combining several photographs into one
- Printing and add a title to photographs
During the course students will be involved in:
- Listening to tutors, watching demonstrations
- Using various controls on the camera to achieve the desired effect
- Using computers to gain hands-on experience and understanding
- Organising your work
- Converting images to black and white and a spot colour introduced, also “pop art’ single colour poster images will be created.
- Cropping, adjusting colour and exposure on photographs with Photoshop.
The progress will be measured through:
- Simple weekly assignments, verbal questioning and practical exercises.
- A montage print of various images will be created in Photoshop that shows the new photographic skills learnt.
Lessons will be instructed by a qualified photographic tutor.
For this course, students must bring their own digital cameras, plus a good supply of batteries for their camera.

Discovering Devon - (available at Channel & Barnstaple Schools of English)
Includes cultural excursions and visits to places of local interest. It provides an opportunity to learn about the area’s history, geography and culture as well as having fun.

Football - (available at Channel School - for 13 to 16 year olds only)
The Football Programme is combined with our 15 hours English Course and is available to students aged 13 – 16 years.
There are 3 sessions of 2.5 hours of Football each week, tutored by a qualified FA (Football Association) coach. Students are coached to a high standard and are taught passing, ball control, running with the ball, heading, shooting, ball keeping, strategy, team dynamics and of course will put all of the training into practice in actual games.

Golf - (available at Channel School only)
This Programme is designed for students aged 10+ and offers golf tuition and practice, combined with 15 or 18 hours of English classes per week.
The Golf programme includes 2 x 4 hour sessions per week in groups of up to 8 with a fully-qualified golf professional. Lessons will be partly instructional and students will learn grip, stance, posture, swing and etiquette, moving onto the course to put this knowledge into practice.
Lessons take place at the lovely Willingcott Valley Golf Club, in beautiful and tranquil surroundings with spectacular views across to Exmoor National Park. Willingcott is a picturesque and varied course; some holes have water, others undulating links-style scenery. The 18-hole course is 6422 yards, par 71.

Students MUST bring suitable clothing and footwear. Jeans are not allowed, and shorts must be of reasonable length. Willingcott Golf Club does not have a strict dress code, so trainers are permissible.
Modern Dance - (available at Channel School only)
This programme can be combined with the 15 Hours Course and will provide 3 x 2.5 hour sessions of Modern Dance lessons.
The lessons will include a warm-up, technical exercises and short routines, all working towards a complete modern dance performance from a London West End musical at the end of the second week, plus sessions of Modern Dance, starting with technical exercises before learning a performance piece.
Lessons will be with qualified dance tutors at a successful dance academy within Ilfracombe, the Rebecca Varley School of Dance.
Students may bring their own dance shoes, but for complete beginners all the sessions can be performed barefoot or in socks.

Riding - (available at Channel School only)
For those of 6 years old and above, the Riding Programme offers students the opportunity to practise and improve a wide range of equestrian skills during the two four-hour sessions per week.
We use two centres, one which offers top quality, disciplined instruction using horses and ponies that compete regularly with success in the show ring and the dressage arena. The other is a less formal stable where students can put into practice what they have learned.

Students require strong shoes with a heel, a waterproof jacket and long trousers and must be prepared to wear a safety hat.
Street Dance - (available at Barnstaple School of English only)
Street Dance is the ultimate modern style of dancing. It combines a variety of styles of dance to create a hybrid urban hip-hop dance. Students will be taught:
- Street group dancing
- New York battle dancing
- Hip-Hop
- Contemporary
- Film and theatre choreography
This programme can be combined with 15, 18 or 21 hours of English lessons per week and will provide 3 sessions per week. The aim of the classes will be to give the students and insight and understanding of modern hip-hop dance and various other genre, with the intention of putting on a performance at the end of their course thus giving them a sense of achievement.
- Lessons will be with Dean Davey, a well-qualified dance tutor and professional dancer and actor from the age of 15. Dean achieved a BA honours degree in Performing Arts from Plymouth University and is a qualified teacher in hip-hop and modern performance dance.
- Dean has worked on various professional stage performances, such as High School Musical, Honey, Stomp the Yard, Step Up, just to name a few West End shows. He was previously with the Royal Ballet and assistant choreographer to the London Hip-Hop Project.
For the Dance lessons, students may bring their own dance shoes, but for complete beginners all sessions can be performed barefoot or in socks.

Surfing - (available at Channel School only)
For those wanting to receive 15 hours per week of English lessons, as well as enjoy surfing at some of the best beaches in Britain, this is the ideal programme available to students aged 7 upwards.
Students must be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing and be prepared to wear appropriate safety equipment when necessary.
Learn to surf or improve your skills with us, at nearby Woolacombe Beach. Your surf lessons will be organised by Atlantic Surfseekers Woolacombe, a British Surfing Association Approved Surf School using qualified and experienced Surfing Instructors and Beach Lifeguards.
In 3 x 3 hour sessions per week, you will follow the BSA Junior Athletes Award Scheme which will cover a variety of topics, including Beach and surf safety, different types of equipment used, techniques for paddling, reading and catching waves, standing up and controlling the board.
Where environmental conditions make surfing unsuitable or unsafe, another activity from the Adventure Sports Programme will be offered.
The package also includes a wetsuit, shoes and a log book, all of which students can keep and take home at the end of the course. These items are included in the course fees.

Tennis - (available at Channel School only)
For students 6 years old and above, this programme offers the opportunity to combine 15 hours of English lessons per week with coaching by a Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) qualified professional. The programme will include lessons with a coach and practice sessions with fellow students.
This programme can accommodate students of any level, from beginners to advanced players. Two sessions of two and a half hours per week are given by a qualified coach on the tennis courts adjacent to the school. There are also two and a half hours of tennis practice each week during which students have use of the tennis courts.
