Activity Programmes

Fun and exciting activity programmes

When not in lessons or with the host families, there is an activity programme full of exciting and interesting activities and excursions on offer, which has entertained literally thousands of students over the years. Our activity and excursion programmes are appropriate to the students’ age, maturity and ability, and everything is carefully planned to ensure students’ safety.

All of our activities and excursions are fully risk assessed, and we also have a library of the risk assessments for the attractions we visit, this way our Activity Leaders have everything they need to look after all the students.

If the weather is not suitable for an activity (it is England, after all) we will change the activity for that day, notifying all students and leaders and making the information visible around the school.

“Our activity and excursion programmes are appropriate to the students’ age, maturity and ability, and everything is carefully planned to ensure students’ safety.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Outside of the timetabled social programme, there are many optional after school activities (payable extra) on offer, such as riding, boat trips, day trips surfing and many more. Prices vary from approximately £6.00 – £50.00, and are available upon request. These trips are optional because students may choose instead to be with the family and follow their daily activities. We hope that these ‘optional’ activities will enable the students to discover some of the delights that North Devon has to offer during their stay, as an added bonus to the Activities already provided on their main programme. These activities will take place after school hours, or at the weekend, and will in no way interrupt the school curriculum. The above activities cannot be booked until the student arrives in the UK, so that the students already at the school do not miss out.

£60 per week is usually sufficient. Please note that there are some optional excursions which can cost in the region of £25, for instance a daytrip to Bath. These ‘Optionals’ can be paid for via the parents’ credit card (2% extra is charged if paying by card) if the student has insufficient funds.

73% of our students do a 4 week course with us, which is the length of course we recommend to see a good improvement in the student’s level of English and make the most out of the visit. Most of the remaining students do a 2, 3 or 6 week course. We therefore run a 4 week social programme with a different daytrip each week. Two of those daytrips always include Exmoor National Park and Exeter (which are by far the most popular daytrips we offer). The other two daytrips can vary; we normally change them year after year because of returning students so that they do not repeat the same trips. If a student arrives when the Exeter trip has already taken place that month the excursion will not be repeated.

North Devon has the best and mildest weather in the Country, but still very changeable. It is advisable to bring a waterproof jacket and a sweater, even in summer, as well as the usual lighter clothing. Click here to check today’s weather forecast for Ilfracombe.

Activity Leaders are staff who attend activities with students; they supervise students, help students, teach students about the content of the activity, and befriend students. Many of our Activity Leaders have been working at Channel School for years and so are very experienced with EFL activities.

Optional Activities

Sometimes Channel School will run Optional Activities for students; such as a trip to Bath, an attraction park, or Wells Cathedral City.We also sometimes offer boat trips in the evening (weather and tides permitting).  These are not part of the timetabled activities and so students must pay extra for these activities. These trips are optional because students may choose instead to be with the host family and follow their daily activities.

Optional Activities may include: quad biking, riding, boat trips, shopping, cultural trips, and more. Prices vary from approximately £5 to £40, and must be paid in cash or by credit card. There is a 2% surcharge for card payments.

We hope that these Optional Activities will enable students to discover some of the delights that North Devon has to offer during their stay, as an added bonus to the activities already provided on their main programme. These activities will take place after school hours, or at the weekend, and will in no way interrupt the school curriculum. The above activities cannot be booked until the student arrives in the UK, so that the students already at the school do not miss out.
